The Fine Details of Punch Needle

Punch needle looks simple: you push a needle through fabric and a loop stays behind. In practice, the beauty lives in three details.

**Tension.** The fabric must be drum-tight in the frame. If it sags even slightly, the loops loosen and the surface ripples. I re-tighten the frame every twenty minutes of work.

**Depth.** The needle should always travel all the way down until the handle touches the cloth, then lift only just above the surface before the next stitch. Lifting too high pulls the previous loop out — the single most common beginner mistake.

**Rhythm and spacing.** Stitches sit roughly two fabric threads apart. Too close and the cloth distorts; too far and the backing shows through. I always work outlines first, then fill inward in gentle curves rather than straight rows, which keeps the pile from forming visible lines.

Finally: never pull a mistake out from the front. Push the loops back through from the reverse side and rub the weave closed with a fingernail — the fabric heals almost invisibly.
